Stape, J.H. E.M. Forster. Macmillan Press, 1992. (£57.50 at Amazon.co.uk) This volume of interviews and recollections offers a wide view of E.M. Forster's character as observed and remembered by college associates, close friends, chance acquaintances and fellow writers. These 46 pieces, some published for the first time, variously reveal facets of his private and public personalities: Forster the subtle analyst of middle-class England, the spokesman for liberal causes and humane values, the Cambridge insider and the committed friend. Included is a chronology of the main events in Forster's life.
Bakshi, Parminder Kaur. Distant Desire: Homoerotic Codes and the Subversion of the English Novel in E.M. Forster's Fiction (Sexuality and Literature, Vol 5). Peter Lang Publishing, 1996. ($47.95 at Amazon.com) Distant Desire focuses on the homoerotic desire coded in all of Forster's novels and illustrates how Forster's aesthetics have been formed by the homoerotic tradition of English Literature. The theme of male friendship occurs in every novel and is connected with the theme of journey. The ideal of male love is conceived as a distant desire. The underlying theme of male friendship in Forster's narratives constantly subverts the conventional, heterosexual plot of the novels.
Bristow, J., ed. E.M. Forster. Longman Higher Education, 2002. (£16.99 at Amazon.co.uk) Since the emergence in the 1980s of critical methods such as distinctive forms of feminism, post-colonial and antihomorphic criticism, Forster's work has been put under fresh scrutiny. This book brings together critical essays to discuss three issues: the popular image of Forster and an examination of the cultural context of his work; his work's reception in his lifetime; and a sense of how criticism has developed around his work, illustrating the demands it places on a variety of these approaches.

Edwards, Mike. E.M. Forster: The Novels. Macmillan Press. 2001. (£37.50 at Amazon.co.uk (hardcover) or £11.50 at Amazon.co.uk (paperback)) This practical approach to E.M. Forster's novels, shows how coherent criticism evolves from close reading of short extracts. The intention is to help students develop confidence in following their own ideas and assimilate skill in analysis. Edwards discusses four of Forster's most commonly studied works: A Room with a View , Howards End , A Passage to India and The Longest Journey . The major part of the book is devoted to sample analyses, with detailed guidance and suggestions for follow up work. There is additional material on Forster's life and work and an introduction to critical treatments of his novels.

Forster's place in the emerging field of queer studies. This collection situates Forster within the Bloomsbury Group, and examines his relations with major figures such as Henry James, Edward Carpenter and Virginia Woolf. Particular attention is paid to Forster's several accounts of India and their troubled relation to the British colonial enterprise. Analyzing a wide range of Forster's work, the authors examine material from Forster's undergraduate writings to stories written more than a half-century later. A study of gender in literature, this book brings the terms "queer" and "gay" into conversation, opening up a dialogue on wider dimensions of theory and allowing a revaluation of modernist inventions of sexual identity.
